Lisa Moser is a fantastic author ("Perfect Soup" is one of my all-time favorites), so I was so excited to be asked to review her new release, "Railroad Hank"
The book did not dissappoint! A narrative that is really all about connection, love, acceptance, and caring for others with a storyline that will keep your kids laughing the whole time (and probably you too). From a developmental standpoint, this is a wonderful book to start teaching your children the concept of "what comes next" - a sequencing skill important in learning how to read.
Railroad Hank is going to see Granny Bett to cheer her up and along the way meets many other friends who offer to help. But instead of taking eggs, he takes the chicken instead of the eggs, the pond instead of the fish, and the trees instead of the apples. (Which also means this is a fun book to discuss with your children where their food comes from).
We really enjoyed this book, making the train sounds together, and enjoying each other at the same time.
Book for Children Ages: 2 years old to 8 years old
Reading Tips:
- Have your children make the train sounds along with you at each phase.
- You can also make the various animal sounds together.
- Try to have your child guess what Railroad Hank will actually take on the train next before turning the page to reveal his silly mistake.
Related Discussion Questions:
- What cheers you up when you are sad?
- What are some ways that you can help other people feel better if they are sad?
- What is your favorite food to eat? Where does it come from?
Activities for Kids:
- Line up boxes or laundry baskets as a train. Fill the "box cars" with toys, stuffed animals, or pillows. Take turns playing the conductor of the train.
- Think of someone you know who might need cheering up and a way to help make their day.
- Draw a picture of your favorite food and where it comes from. If you can, think of all the different steps it goes through so you can eat it.
Cultural Diversity: The one thing that was missing from this book was diversity. Though I did appreciate showing a diversity of ages, it would have been helpful to have some cultural/ethnic diversity as well.
